[Fact] Origin of the name Golf

Sports have been one of the major contributors in cultivating the interactions between people, nurturing the growth of cultures, creating sense of unity, building up the challenging nature and competition, thus pushing the humans to strive for the betterment. The advent of sports have been recorded years and years ago, dating back to the early BC’s. Sports have been born, evolved and improvised over the years, from a simple ball game in the BC’s to the motorized sports of the AD’s.

Golf is one of the richest and less popular games that we have in the world today. It is a game where the players hit balls using clubs into a series of holes spread across a big playing area  called Golf Courses. There are rules for this game goverened by governing bodies namely R&A and UGSA. The player has to take the ball across the 9 or 18 hole course in as minimum strikes of the club as possible.

There has been a lot of places on the world wide web which tell stories about the origin of the name golf. The most famous of those says that the word GOLF is an acronym for “Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden“. This is just a rumour that has been moving around for quite some tme now. There is a rumour that says that GOLF is FLOG spelled backwards, as in flogging the ball with a stick.

Although there are many other accounts of golf like games being played in early China and  Netherlands, the modern Golf is said to be originated in Scotland. The word Golf is said to have evolved from the Scots word “Gouf” or “Gowf” which is similar to the Dutch word ” Colf” meaning a  ”Stick” or a “Club“. Records also say that king James II of Scotland of Scotland ordered a ban on ”Gowf” and football since it was a distraction to the military archery practice.
